The American Maltese Association is committed to helping the Maltese fancy have healthy happy companions.  The purpose of this part of our web site is to provide the Maltese fancy with information that could be useful in caring for our beloved dogs.  We are proud to have accumulated some great articles and relevant links to help educate all of us who love our breed.  Because the Maltese breed is over 2000 years old, we are lucky to have a breed that has had the benefit of centuries to perfect.

The Health Committee of the American Maltese Association is dedicated to help all Maltese owners in understanding health issues that may affect our breed.  Although our breed is not commonly afflicted  with serious health issues, as with all dogs as well as humans, there are health issues that may arise during the lifetime of our Maltese.  Some are acquired and some are genetic in nature.

Maltese are considered a relatively healthy breed when purchased from a reputable breeder.

The Health Committee is working with our Maltese Breeders as well as the American Kennel Club's Canine Health Foundation (AKC/CHF), Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), and top researchers to try and do all we can to identify relevant Maltese health issues, educate our breeders and owners, promote pertinent health testing and breed for a healthier Maltese.
Thank you for your interest in our lovely breed.
